How Does It Work?
The calculator is driven by two primary factors: New Pool Deck and Resurface Pool Deck. Let’s dive into how each of these impacts the overall cost estimation.
New Pool Deck:
This calculator needs Area “W x L” of the pool deck in order to get an approximate cost. Once you have measured the width and length of your pool deck, simply multiply these numbers to get the total area.
Area = W * L
Choose Wood Type:

The type of wood you choose for your pool deck will impact the overall cost. Different wood types have different prices per square foot, we narrow down some of wooden types typically used for pool decks and their estimated costs below:
Material | Cost per sq.ft |
---|---|
Pressure-Treated Pine | $5 |
Cedar | $8 |
Redwood | $10 |
Composite | $12 |
Tropical Hardwood | $15 |
Material Cost:
To calculate the total material cost, multiply the cost of the chosen wood type per square foot by the total area of your pool deck (calculated using the formula in the section above). This will give you an approximate estimate of the material expenses for your project.
Waste Factor:
It is important to factor in a waste percentage when estimating the material cost for your wooden pool deck. This accounts for any cuts, damages or unusable pieces of wood that may occur during the construction process. The industry standard recommends adding 5-10% to your total material estimate as a waste factor. This percentage would be multiple with the total material cost to give you a more accurate estimate that takes into account any potential waste.
Total Material Cost = Cost per Square Foot * Total Area * 1.10 (10%)
Labor Complexity:
The labor cost for constructing a pool deck will depend on the complexity of the project and the rates in your local area. To estimate the labor charge, multiply the labor cost per square foot by the total area of your pool deck. This calculation ensures an accurate estimate tailored to your specific project and region.
Complexity | Labor Cost per sq.ft |
---|---|
Basic | $10 |
Moderate | $20 |
Complex | $30 |
Total Labor Cost: Area * Labor Rate
Sealing and Staining:
Applying a sealant or stain to your pool deck can add protection and enhance the overall appearance. Sealing helps prevent moisture from seeping into the concrete, which can cause cracks and deterioration over time. Staining allows you to customize the color of your deck to better match your outdoor space. The average cost for sealing is $1-2 per square foot, while staining ranges from $2-5 per square foot.
Sealing Cost = Area × $2
Design Complexity Fee:
The design complexity fee is an additional cost that may be added to your pool deck project. This fee covers the extra time and effort required for more intricate designs, patterns, or customizations. We have added this fee to ensure that our team is properly compensated for their work on these types of projects.

Permits:
In some cases, you may also need to obtain permits for your pool deck project. This will depend on the size and scope of your project, as well as local regulations and building codes. The cost for permits varies by location but typically ranges from $50-1000. This step can be ignored if needed.
Total Cost:
Cost of Wooden Pool Deck = Material Cost + Labor Cost + Sealing Cost + Design Fee + Permit
Resurface Pool Deck:
If you need to resurface your current pool deck, the cost will vary depending on the type of material you choose and the labor involved. In this case, you won’t need to worry about obtaining a permit and the cost is lower than building a new pool deck.
To calculate the cost of resurfacing your pool deck, you will need to consider the area and replaced percent. The area is the total surface area of your pool deck and the replaced percent is the amount of damaged or worn out areas that need to be resurfaced.
Replaced Area = Total Area × (Percentage / 100
Staining & Sealing:
In many cases the pool owner want to have the pool deck stained and sealed at the time of resurfacing. Staining will provide a fresh new look and sealing will help protect the surface from water damage, stains and fading. Staining costs $4 per square foot, while sealing is priced at $3 per square foot.
Staining Cost = Area * $4
&
Sealing Cost = Area * $3
Replacing Damaged Deck:
Unlike “New Pool Deck”, this involves removing a portion of the pool deck and replacing it with new wood. The formula include:
Material Cost = Replaced Area × Wood Cost × 1.10
“Replaced Area” is the area to be replaced, “Wood Cost” is per square foot cost of wood and 1.10 accounts for waste.
Labor Cost:
The labor cost for replacing a damaged deck is based on the area to be replaced. It typically ranges from $10 – $30 per square foot, depending on the complexity of the project and the type of wood being used.
Labor Cost = Replaced Area × Labor Rate
Total Cost:
To get the total cost of replacing a damaged deck, we need to add the material cost and labor cost together. This will give us a more accurate estimate of how much it would cost to replace the damaged section.
Total Cost = Material Cost + Labor Cost
