When you’re mixing chemicals in pool water, you must know the exact amount of gallons in your pool. This important step will help you accurately measure and add the appropriate amount of chemicals, ensuring that your pool stays clean and safe. Here, we help our users to figure out how to calculate pool volume especially an oval pool.
How to Calculate the Amount of Water in Your Oval Pool?
The oval shape is basically an elliptical cylinder, and the formula for calculating its volume is V=πabh where a and b are the semi-major and semi-minor axes of the ellipse, respectively, and h is the height of the cylinder. But it’s hard for everyone to find axes, so we’ve provided a simpler formula that will get you the same result.
Volume = (π × Length × Width × Average Depth) ÷ 4
or
Volume = π * (Length/2) * (Width/2) * Average Depth
Let’s break it down further and simplify the steps for you:
- Measure the length of your pool from one end to another.
- Measure the width of your pool from side to side at its widest point.
- Determine the average depth of your pool by measuring the shallow end and deep end, then adding those two numbers together and dividing by 2.
- Divide both length and width by 2 to get the semi-major and semi-minor axes respectively.
- Plug in all these values into our simplified formula: Volume = (π * (length/2) * (width/2) * Average Depth)
- The result will be in cubic feet, so you will need to convert it to gallons by multiplying the result by 7.48 (1 cubic foot = 7.48 gallons).
- Now, you have the accurate amount of water in your oval pool and can proceed with adding chemicals accordingly.

It’s important to note that this formula works best for pools with a gradual depth change, rather than a sharp drop off. For more complex pool shapes or if you’re unsure about your measurements, we recommend consulting a professional or using an online pool volume calculator.
